. . .here are my thoughts.

What is your favorite uncommon word beginning with “U”?

umwelt: (n) the world as an organism experiences it

Picture an ant colony immediately after it’s been disturbed. Little blurs of blackness scurry around in apparent utter chaos. With a bottle of insecticide in hand, you pause to contemplate what’s going on in each of their tiny ant brains. Do they all know exactly what job they must do at that moment? What do they think has just befallen their home? Are they aware of what will momentarily become of all those around them? And are they aware that quadrillions of other ants will go right on living when they’re gone? As you pull the trigger of your Ortho Home Defense Max Insect Killer, you search for the perfect word to describe those thoughts. However, no English word will suffice. Luckily, English speakers have borrowed numerous words from other languages. Schadenfreude, zeitgeist, wanderlust, and doppelgänger have all been borrowed directly from German. Ladies and gentlemen, the Germans have done it yet again! I present to you: umwelt. We also have all those amazing Yiddish words we stole borrowed. What language do you suppose Yiddish is most closely related to? Yup: German.
