Q&complAints #713: Adult Age

At what age should someone be considered an adult?

Post your answer in the LEAVE A COMMENT section below. I’m not the boss of you, though. Don’t write anything for all I care! You’re an adult. You can make your own decisions.

. . .here are my thoughts.

At what age should someone be considered an adult?

Lots of derogatory naming conventions come out of the human mouth about what’s inside—and often eventually outside—the human mouth. Talk about baby teeth with a 7-year-old and you’ll find out first-hand they’re certainly no baby. But anyone who hears baby teeth instantly understands the reference is to a child’s deciduous teeth that will soon fall out to be replaced with adult teeth (another derogatory name). Even if you call them permanent teeth, those with dentures may take umbrage. Most kids have all their permanent adult teeth (sans those that will eventually make them wise) around age 13. Maybe the Jewish community is onto something. Surely there’s some uncontacted indigenous group in the Brazilian rainforest where you become a man upon killing your first wild pig with a blowgun—expected by age 6, lest the boy be castrated and relegated from hunter to gather with the rest of the non-men. Ageism and sexism—how uncivilized! Many cultures simply attribute adulthood at the rather arbitrary age of 18. Like an elderly (is that derogatory?) person whistling through a fresh set of dentures might tell you: age is nothing but a number.
