What advice would you be better off not giving?
I’ve been contemplating writing an advice book for kids from the perspective of an adult without children. Like many stupid ideas that enter my brain, I’ve already extensively outlined it and written some chapters. One of the few concepts that couldn’t be described as shit-parents-would-never-tell-their-kids, would be about language acquisition. I recommend frequenting Word-of-the-Day (WOTD) apps and/or podcasts. While kids aren’t likely to remember definitions of even a quarter of these words, at least they’ll better familiarize themselves with the language. Spelling, pronunciation, or definition of any WOTD matters far less than the information in the “Did You Know?” and “Etymology” sections. Did you know the penny-farthing bicycle was so named because of the drastic size discrepancy of the wheels? They resemble a penny next to a much smaller one-quarter cent piece—a farthing. I may have never learned that had I not frequented WOTD apps. Even more important is practice identifying prefixes, roots, and suffixes that’ll help youngsters get a broad idea of the meaning of many words they’ve never come across before. Once teens have ascertained word erudition, they can peruse my book’s indecorous chapter: Always Carry a Condom!
