What is your favorite uncommon word beginning with “V”?
velleity: (n) a mere wish, without any effort to obtain it
Have you ever told somebody about an exceedingly tough situation you’re in? A time in life when everything stacks up like a Catalan castell with some 6-year-old climbing to the top of a 40-foot human pyramid. Except you’re the only one at the base of that pyramid. After hearing about all your trials and tribulations, that somebody says they’ll pray for you. You’d much prefer they take something off your plate: help cut your grass, pick your kid up from school, etc. While they mean well, their prayers are mere velleity. Since they believe prayer does something, they don’t believe they’re acting velleitously. If they jot your issues into their mental notebook for a future prayer session, but that page of their brain gets the ol’ palimpsest treatment before they can get a prayer sent out, then they are fully in the realm of velleity. However, if they truly had no intention at all to pray for you, they’re not velleitous. They’re an ungodly lying asshole! A far greater sin than that 6-year-old staring up a pyramid, refusing to climb.
