. . .here are my thoughts.

What would you bring to a dinner party?

Rare is that perfect toast, lasting forever in the hearts and minds of all celebrating an occasion.  Infinitely more likely is the drunken disaster that’s immortalized in the memories of millions thanks to a viral YouTube video.  People should’ve learned from all these god-awful efforts that it’s not worth the inevitable embarrassment.  If asked to give a speech at a wedding reception or dinner party, I’d simply hold a glass high, vocalize “Cheers” in a confident voice, and proceed with increasing my blood alcohol content.  When coeds at a bar announce “Cheers” prior to each of their four rounds of shots, it devalues the simple, yet potentially powerful wish.  Similarly, a best man can’t readily spout that single syllable at the reception of his best friend and the new bride if previously overheard cheersing the bartender no fewer than seven times that evening.  Perhaps, then, if I want to bring this simple salutation to a dinner party—in lieu of a traditional speech—I should cease using “Cheers” in place of the conventional “Thank you.”  Then again, maybe it’s better to live in infamy of the Internet, than die and be forgotten.
