What is your favorite uncommon word beginning with “W”?
whoosis: (n) someone’s name you don’t know or can’t remember
I’m really bad at remembering names. When I actually care about trying to remember somebody’s name, I’ll attempt to employ a method of remembering it. Sometimes I can’t remember the mechanism I use to remember their name. Even worse are the times I remember the memory trick but can’t remember the thing the memory trick is supposed to make me remember. (I also can’t remember any synonyms of remember.) An example should help clear all this up. I have at least three Karen’s I talk to or about on a semi-regular basis. You’d think I wouldn’t need a method to trigger my brain into recalling (there’s one!) the name Karen. Popular culture has turned Karen into a universal term over the last couple decades. That’s the exact way I recall the name Karen. I’ll say to myself, “Her name’s what we call someone acting privileged and entitled.” But then, yeah … I can’t recollect (there’s another) what we call someone acting privileged and entitled. Since I’m so bad with names, I might as well just start referring to everyone as “whoosis.”
