Q&complAints #303: Shyness

What is one thing you are never shy about?

Post your answer in the LEAVE A COMMENT section below. I’m not the boss of you, though. Don’t write anything for all I care! Come on, though, don’t be shy.

. . .here are my thoughts.

What is one thing you are never shy about?

Have you ever encountered a sentence that starts with an extensive list of items or names, before saying what the hell they have in common?  So annoying!  As the list grows, you attempt to link the items or names together.  Were these things all found at a Hollywood orgy?  Did all these people perish in a tragic, yet humorous, clown car accident?  By the time the sentence concludes—finally unveiling the subject at hand—you’ve forgotten all but the first and last in the series.  You’re forced to ask for the list to be repeated, or to re-read the sentence in order to fully grasp its contents.  This illogical sentence structure of list-before-subject should seldom be used to convey information.  It can, however, be strategically used in writing to call added attention to something—since it forces a second read—or to delay a punchline for humorous effect.  Otherwise, avoid it in speech.  I assure you I’ll never be shy about asking for such a list to be repeated—multiple times!  I’d even interrupt your joke, making you repeat all 27 clown’s names just as you’re about to deliver the punchline.
