. . .here are my thoughts.
How can you tell someone has lived an exceptionally sheltered life?
I’m picturing a co-ed group of prudish, cloistered youngsters—unquestionably religious, perhaps living northwest of the Four Corners—studying for the ACT or SAT. Taking a practice test, they arrive at the word “podophilia.” They’ve learned that “pod-” is the Greek root for “foot, feet,” and “-philia” is Greek for “friendship, affection, love.” Thus, they unanimously agree on the correct answer: “A sexual interest in feet.” The nerdiest of the clan interjects before the next question, employing his intellect in an attempt to garner a general philia from the pigtailed redhead with oversized glasses he’s had a crush on since 5th grade:
“Of course, we all know the Latin prefix for ‘foot or walking’: as in ‘pedal’ or ‘pedestrian.’ If we were to combine that Latin prefix with the Greek suffix for love—which, why would you mix and match like that—then we’d have another word for the love of feet. But, I mean, I’ve never heard of ‘podophilia’ before; it can’t be that common. So there’s probably no real need for another word for the love of feet. I for one, though, think ‘pedophilia’ could become popular!”
