What is something people search for but rarely find?
Remember the 2011 movie, In Time, in which people use time as currency? The time remaining in your life ticks away from a digital readout on your forearm. It expires, you expire! A ridiculous poker scene in the film has Justin Timberlake’s character essentially all-in—less than 30 seconds remain on his clock—before the cards are flipped over and he drags a 1,100 year pot. That scene never sat well with me. There’s a concept in poker known as the “slow-roll.” Essentially, a player waits longer than he should before turning his cards face up—usually showing a very strong hand. Needless to say, slow-rolling is a huge breach of etiquette in the world of poker. In the film, there was nothing stopping Timberlake’s opponent from holding onto his cards for half a minute before tabling them. This should have been the slow-roll to end all slow-rolls. Imagine winning 11 centuries worth of life by default after your opponent dies right there at the table. Poker players have been searching for—but never finding—a sure-fire way to win such a huge prize for as long as cards have existed.
