. . .here are my thoughts.
What is the world’s worst ranking system?
At the start of the film Next Goal Wins, the American Samoa national football (soccer) team had never scored even a single goal, had recently lost 31-0 to Australia, and were ranked dead last in the FIFA World Rankings. This is a ranking system that is a bit … let’s just say, shite! Of the 210 nations ranked on the men’s side, the United States currently sits at 18. That is laughably high. The rankings involve a convoluted scoring system that’s subject to manipulation—as Poland allegedly did prior to the 2018 World Cup to artificially elevate them into a desired position as one of the eight highest ranked nations. Spoiler alert for the film, American Samoa scored two goals and actually won their match against Tonga. American Samoa is currently ranked 189, while Tonga is 199. The team embarrassingly pushing up the rear at spot 210, San Marino, recently won their first match since 2004. Despite the victory, they still bring up the caboose. To be fair to tiny San Marino’s 33,000 citizens, they are forced to constantly play against very powerful European nations, not Oceania minnows like American Samoa and Tonga.
