. . .here are my thoughts.
What movie star’s success can only be attributed to their looks?
Belfast is a film entirely in black-and-white, except for scenes from color movies viewed in a theater: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and One Million Years B.C. I’d only heard about CCBB, but had no idea it featured a flying car. It makes more sense to me to shine a light on Raquel Welch in OMYBC. Her poster lined bedroom walls and lit up libidos of many a young man. Might her success have been due to her looks? That infamous poster—featuring a cavewoman bikini—covered a completely different sort of hole to freedom for Andy Dufresne in The Shawshank Redemption. Was the director of Belfast highlighting the ability of films to add a temporary bit of light to the darkness surrounding the turbulence between Northern Ireland’s Catholics and Protestants? I really don’t know. Nor, frankly, can I understand why Belfast was nominated for the 2022 Best Picture Oscar. I can, however, understand why The Shawshank Redemption failed to win the 1995 Oscar. It had stiff competition: the likes of Forrest Gump, and Pulp Fiction. My vote would have gone to Shawshank, though—even without that Raquel Welch poster.
