The majority of The Shawshank Redemption was filmed in Mansfield, Ohio. Shawshank is undoubtedly a great film, yet I can’t help but believe its reputation has been somewhat tarnished by the inherent sexism of Mansfield. I’m not saying the Codified Ordinance of the City of Mansfield forbids women from skiing the black diamond slopes at Snow Trails for fear of how treacherous they are for the fairer sex’s inferior athleticism. Not even Mansfield would be that outwardly sexist! Honestly, though, those slopes aren’t all that difficult even for a novice like myself. Rather, the sexism of the Shawshank location is right in the city’s name: MANSfield. Should the eponymous city—named after a Surveyor General of the U.S., Colonel Jarred Mansfield—change its name? Perhaps with a rebrand to Personsfield, we could feel better about both the city and the film. Then again, such an alteration would serve only to erase sexism going forward. It’d do nothing to make reparations for the 215+ years of its penis-centricity. Thus, we can’t fully eliminate sexism from modern society until after 2240 when the City of Womansfield has given equal time to the two biological sexes.
