. . .here are my thoughts.

What is your favorite uncommon word beginning with “L”?

lagniappe: something given as a bonus or extra gift

If you’ve ever eaten at a Chinese restaurant, you’ve received a lagniappe: the fortune cookie.  An argument can be made, however, that because a fortune is expected every time, it no longer qualifies as a bonus.  The word can be subjectively applied.  It’s an objective fact, though, that Louisiana is where this beautiful word made its U.S. debut.  However, I had no such knowledge of that while attending Mardi Gras during Spring Break from undergrad.  Hell, I didn’t even know lagniappe existed until 2 decades later.  Despite having no concept of the word, I gladly accepted any lagniappe I was offered.  That’s what any young lad with a lack of funds would do.  And who doesn’t love a word with a silent “g”?  Signs that foreign campaigns align include gnomes gnashing gnats.  See what I mean?  That sentence makes absolutely no sense, yet you love not having to pronounce those seven g’s.  Perhaps the main reason for enjoying lagniappe is that you need not feel one iota of shame when you can’t spell it.  Truth be told, I can barely pronounce it!
