. . .here are my thoughts.

What is your favorite uncommon word beginning with “H”?

Hobson’s choice: (noun) an apparent free choice when there’s really no alternative

This underused word is said to have derived from a fella in the late 16th and early 17th centuries called Thomas Choice.  He was a stable owner who—.  Alright, you got me!  Can’t pull the wool over your eyes, can I?  This eponymous word is named for Thomas Hobson, of course.  Mr. Hobson was a stable owner in Cambridge, England who offered customers who desired to rent a horse, two options: the steed in the stall nearest to the door, or no horse at all.  It came down to timing as to which pony you were offered.  Customers could no longer choose the prettiest horsey, while all the others grew self-conscious.  No more cherry-picking the stallion most capable of making your long or fast trip, while the others stood around getting fat on hay.  No sir!  Whichever filly was most rested would serve as your 17th century Uber.  Or you could start walking your damn self!  Those were your choices.  But let’s be honest, ambulation wasn’t an option.  Thus, all you were truly left with was ol’ Hobson’s choice.
