How did you earn your first dollar?
Received or earned? I assume few people know when they received their first dollar. Some parents-to-be establish a 529 college savings plan prior to conception. Then we must deal with the technicality of the word receive. You can’t readily receive something before you’re even born, let alone before sperm and egg have their meet-cute. Then again you wouldn’t so much receive that 529 money as have it sent directly to an overpriced institution of higher learning. Regardless, 529 plans began after I was born, so yeah, let’s discuss those earned dollars. The first dollar I can recall “earning” came from playing soccer. My mother would give me a $1 bill for every goal I scored in the summer recreational league. I scored lots of goals! So many, in fact, other kids started asking if I was headed to the strip club with all those singles. Since I got paid for my efforts on the field, was I technically an 8-year-old professional soccer player? I never paid taxes on those dollars. Was my first income also my first felony? Messi, Ronaldo, Neymar—all the greats fudge their taxes. I was just at the vanguard.
