. . .here are my thoughts.
In what situation would you feel completely unsafe?
As kids, my brother and I would bike around the neighborhood—joyful and free—without a care in the world. Wind whipped through our hair as we peddled as hard as possible, taking those corners at far too great a speed, trusting completely in our ability to keep our bikes upright. It was no big deal to not wear a helmet while biking in those days. As I watch the Tour de France each July, old footage is shown of cyclists racing up and down mountains without a single helmet to be seen. How times have changed! Today, I would feel completely unsafe clipping into my peddles without first clipping that strap tight under my chin. Back in the 90s, my father suddenly insisted my brother and I begin wearing helmets, along with attaching an orange caution flag to the rear of our bikes. Those demands coincided with the time my wind-whipped hair and freedom of travel ended. I refused to wear a helmet back then, but it turns out my father was simply ahead of his time regarding head protection. He failed, however, to foresee flashing LED lights for visibility purposes.
