What is your favorite cartoon?
Disney+ seems like an odd platform for The Woman King, given its scenes and references to slavery, war, and rape. Then again, Disney seems to own just about everything these days, so some of the seedier aspects of culture will inevitably sneak past the mouse’s all-hearing ears. The film’s women warriors are reminiscent of the female fighters from another Disney property: the Dora Milaje of Wakanda. The Internet tells me this may have been intentional. I can accept the woman of Wakanda heal quickly after injury, given their medical advancements. But I have no clue how the Agojie women in The Woman King heal so fast. At one point, recruits take a blood oath to officially join the military unit. A single dagger is pulled across each of their forearms in succession, blood flowing into a ceremonial bowl. None of the women seemed the least bit bothered even seconds afterward from what looked to be deep gashes. We’ll never know how many blood-borne pathogens were transmitted among the ladies from that single, bloody knife. Perhaps two centuries later Wakanda developed a cure for HIV.
