What is the best present you’ve received in the past six months?

. . .here are my thoughts.
What is the best present you’ve received in the past six months?
With Christmas presents still vivid in my mind, this should be an easy question to answer. I asked for, and received, LOTS of socks this Christmas. But I can’t choose a single pair without disparaging all the others. Nobody says my greatest gift has to be wrapped up and slapped with a bow. Anyone with a newborn will agree. The best present I got on Christmas Day was—without a doubt—the launch of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). This $10 billion, multi-national collaboration was originally scheduled to launch in 2007. You read that right—14 years ago! But the lengthy delay promises to be well worth it. The beautiful pictures and indispensible knowledge we’ve garnered from the 2+ decades of the Hubble Space Telescope will pale in comparison to what we’ll learn from the JWST. How did the first galaxies form? What about supermassive black holes? The JWST will help piece together the earliest blanks in the family tree of the Universe, and investigate the potential for life on other planets. It’ll be another 6 months, though, until data collection starts. No sense in rushing now!
