. . .here are my thoughts.
What is the most disturbing sound in the world?
I’m generally not that emotional of a person. But if you want to elicit moisture to escape my eye and crawl down my cheek, you have two surefire methods: a congratulatory scene post-space launch, or 9/11 footage. Two vast extremes of emotion—each with the same reaction. The day of this post marks the 20th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks. Where has the time gone?! A 6-episode documentary, 9/11: One Day in America, ran earlier this month on National Geographic. It contains extensive real-time video, creating an entirely new understanding of the terror and devastation of that September day. I highly recommend watching that documentary, or one of the numerous other 9/11-related programs recently released. In 9/11: One Day in America, numerous witnesses of the collapsing towers describe the sounds they remember as floor after floor crush down on the one below it in rapid succession—110 floors gone in only 10 seconds. The words of each survivor differ slightly, but convey the same feeling of disbelief and fear. The only sound more disturbing than that of the South Tower collapsing, is that same sound repeating 29 minutes later.
