Meds & Counsel without Patience for Patients
Ever heard of Dick’s Last Resort? Never been to the restaurant myself, but I love the concept. It’s like the court jester in medieval times being able to tell the King the harsh truth since everything he said was in—you guessed it—jest. Why has no pharmacy taken up this business practice? If patients expect harsh but fair truth from the pharmacy team, they’ll accept it readily.

Early Refill . . . Again
[Rph]: “We can’t fill it for 3 more days, Mr. Barker.”
[Patient]: “But you can if I call the doctor and he says it’s okay?”
[Rph]: “Not this time. You’ve filled it early a few times recently, and all the other months you picked up a 30 day supply after 28 days. You should have lots left.”
[Pt]: “Yeah, but I’m going on vacation.”
[Rph]: “By my math, you should have, like, at least 30 tablets still.”
[Pt]: “It’s a long trip.”
[Rph]: “You go on a lot of vacations. Must be nice.”
[Pt]: “Yeah, I guess so.”
[Rph]: “All these trips must be expensive, too. Guess that’d explain why all your pants have holes in them.”
[Pt]: “It’s the style!”
[Rph]: “Well, where you headed this time?”
[Pt]: “Umm . . . out of the country.”
[Rph]: “Tell you what. Show me your passport and your itinerary, complete with plane tickets, and then I’ll accept that call from your doctor.”
[Pt]: “Fine. I’ll be back.”
[Rph 2]: “He won’t come back, Marianne.”
[Rph]: “They never do.”
[Rph 2]: “But what if he went to the trouble to book a flight, pay for it, then cancel it just so he can show you his tickets?”
[Rph]: “There’s gotta be a big fee for cancellation this close to departure, Roger. But then, yeah, I’d respect the doctor’s early fill authorization.”
[Rph 2]: “Hell, if he went to that much trouble, I wouldn’t even need the call from his doctor!”
