What is your favorite genre of music?
Chalk up whatever musical categorization Hamilton falls under as my new favorite music genre! Hamilton is one of those movies/plays that demands multiple viewings. You can’t possibly catch all the historical and musical references on first watch, and the songs are difficult to decipher without captions. I certainly noticed the obvious parallels between Hamilton’s mantra (“I’m not throwing away my shot”) and Eminem’s refrain (“You only get one shot, do not miss your chance …”) in the theme song of his rap battle centric film, 8 Mile. Hamilton includes a few rap battles of its own (Cabinet Battle #1 & #2). A much subtler nod—one I may be reading more into than was intended—is the mention of the comma in the letter Hamilton wrote to his sister-in-law. I took this as reference to the long-standing debates about commas in both the Declaration of Independence and in the 2nd Amendment. Even if you miss most of the song and rap lyrics, it’s obvious that Alexander Hamilton’s last act was one of hypocrisy. What was all that “I’m not throwing away my shot” bullshit if he’s going to discharge his lead shot skyward?
