. . .here are my thoughts.

Laterals are underutilized in football!  I’ve been saying this for years.  I can understand why NFL coaches won’t implement them—huge money is at stake in the pros.  No coach in their right mind is willing to risk breaking decades of tradition to liven up their offense.  However, I’m thoroughly amazed no college team uses laterals as a staple of their offense.  Sure, there’d be a spike in turnovers, but those should be more than matched by an increase in touchdowns.  Once defenses begin anticipating laterals, fake pitches will create mind games between ball-carriers and defensive backs.  Coaches are obviously aware of the legality of the lateral—they have no qualms using infinite laterals if they need to go 80 yards for a TD on the final play of the game.  I’m not talking about this craziness, though.  I want to see laterals during scripted plays when they’re relatively safe.  On an episode of Young Sheldon, the genius boy compiled stats to prove teams should never punt.  A youngster needs to do similar research on the benefits of the lateral.  Maybe the Miami Dolphins coach will. He looks like he’s still an adolescent.
