What are you holding a grudge about?
Let’s talk Emancipation. Not Lincoln’s 19th century Emancipation Proclamation; the 21st century film starring Will Smith. A film that—if you’re anything like me—makes you rally against its main character. I wanted to root for the emancipated man to truly be free, to reunite with the family he was sold away from, and to kill every White bastard at those plantations. I really, really did. But our main character was portrayed by Will Smith. I guess I hold a grudge against Smith, because I found myself rooting for him to get far more than a smack across the face and a few foul words spewed his way. Justice for Rock! If not in real life, then on-screen will have to suffice. Perhaps this influenced the lackluster reviews of the film. Or maybe so few people liked it because each act of the film felt like a stand-alone movie with a stand-alone plot:
- Slavery
- Hide-and-go-seek
- Civil War
The film’s cohesion was further disrupted as it seemed partly shot in black-and-white, and partially using a “perpetual dusk” filter. Either way, the director seemed to demand that light not be fully emancipated.
