. . .here are my thoughts.
What one thing is unfortunately true?
We’ve all seen “Look Out for Motorcycles” bumper stickers. I’ve long wondered about the bright yellow sticker’s ratio of benefit-to-harm. It’s not like people will read the bumper sticker and realize:
“What!? Two wheeled motor vehicles are allowed on roads? Holy shit—I’ve only been looking out for things smaller than women walking their dogs in the wrong direction, and vehicles larger than a Toyota Yaris. Didn’t realize there was anything in that middle ground.”
Let’s be honest, even a Yaris is tough to see most times. An automobile operator’s responsibility includes not pulling out in front of a 105 MPH, Road Runner-esque blur. Thus, those stickers—as subtle as the blazing sun—seem a good idea. Unless, that is, these reminders redirect attention from actively watching out for motorcycles, to reading a warning to do the very thing you just took a pause from doing. It’s unfortunately true that motorcycles assume greater risk than automobiles, since drivers are more vigilant of larger vehicles that can cause them more serious harm. Fortunately, you’ll always be able to hear a motorcycle approaching … unless you’re deaf from previous, prolonged operation of a two-wheeled public nuisance.
