. . .here are my thoughts.
What is your favorite uncommon word beginning with “Q”?
quiddity: (noun) 1. the inherent nature of someone or something; essence.
2. an odd feature; eccentricity.
I’ve never been able to understand England’s monetary units. Since I’ve never traveled across the pond, the only experience I have with their currency is what I’ve heard in movies and on TV: pound sterling, shilling, quid, pence. Turns out, it’s a hell of a lot simpler than I’ve been led to believe. First off, a shilling isn’t even a thing anymore. A pence is pretty much like a U.S. penny—100 pence constitutes a pound sterling, often shortened to just pound. Quid is simply a slang term for a pound. Instead of my wife being told her Starbucks order costs 9 bucks here in the States, she might be told it’s 7 quid in Jolly Old England. Note that it’s always “quid,” never “quids.” One could rightly say that lack of pluralization is quid’s quiddity. As for why people continue to spend so much moolah on Starbucks calorie-laden foofoo garbage drinks, I will never know. Suppose I have little choice but to chalk it up to their inherent nature—their quiddity, if you will.
