. . .here are my thoughts.
What is the key to happiness?
I’m confused about the evolution of the word partner. When I was a lad, a partner was somebody you were engaged with in business or crime (potentially both). One way or another, you were in financial cahoots. Eventually the term was commandeered by the LGBTQ community to refer to people in a same-sex relationship. This was back before the United States afforded same-sex couples the same right to ultimate happiness that had so long been granted to only a man and a woman: marriage. No need to come up with some perfect terminology that neither came on too strong, nor undersold the relationship: special friend, boyfriend, significant other, booty call. Partner nicely fit the bill. All was right in the world … until the heteros swooped in, demanding to use partner as well. Partners once relied on one another during business in the boardroom. LGBTQ partners proceeded to lie with one another during bedroom business. Today, any two (or more) long-term partners too often lie to one another, wishing the other(s) would mind their own damn business. The English language evolves rapidly—especially in the Internet age—but this constant partner vacillation confounds me.
The key to happiness is finding someone you enjoy being with. And always telling the truth to each other.
… and knowing exactly when to tell those little, white lies. Right??
