Given your body and overall health, what’s one thing you could never do?

I’ll never be able to become the next American Ninja Warrior (ANW). Forget the fact I’ve never sent in an audition tape. It’s because of my general lack of grip strength. I used to think focusing on exercises to strengthen my forearm muscles, along with learning to ignore the burn of a prolonged grip, would be the final pieces needed to win that $1,000,000 prize. After reading Bill Bryson’s The Body: A Guide for Occupants, however, I learned that genetics may be heavily to blame.

“About 14 percent of us lack a muscle called the palmaris longus, which helps to keep the palm tensed. It is rarely missing from top-ranked athletes who need a strong grip . . .”

Until last year, I sincerely believed I could complete all but Stage 3 & 4 of the ANW National Finals. But each season the competitors get younger, faster, and stronger, while the courses get tougher. Each passing year finds me merely older, slower, and weaker. The quote at the beginning of the book’s final chapter—tilted, THE END—sums it up:

“Exercise regularly. Eat sensibly. Die anyway.”

  1. I am not athletic at all. When we were in school, I was always the last kid picked. Somethings don’t change. I love towalk, and I do that no less then 4 times a week for at least 3 to 4 miles each time. I like to walk by myself because I can’t even walk a straight line. I walk at a fast pace, so no one wants to walk with me because of how fast I walk.
