. . .here are my thoughts.
What are your thoughts on the Cleveland Indians changing their name and mascot?
I hear Guardians and think of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise. I’ve never seen the GotG flicks, but I did see the Avengers films. In one of them, Groot—a tree that can only say “I am Groot”—breaks off his arm to be used as a handle for Thor’s hammer. What is a baseball bat but a thick, tapering axe handle? An unlimited supply of bats at a baseball team’s disposal is a good thing. Strike 1, for positivity. I’m sure Cleveland would’ve loved to have Groot as their mascot, but Marvel’s licensing fee would be unreasonable. Strike 2, for effort. Even though Groot’s not the Cleveland mascot, the very association with GotG screams inclusion. Guardians won’t care if you can only mutter a single comprehensible phrase to the interviewer following your walk-off homerun. Just keep bringing us those W’s. Strike 3, for inclusivity. Honestly, I have no idea where I’m going with this “3-strikes” analogy. I planned this paragraph out worse than Cleveland has their names and mascots. Indians: strike 1. Guardians: strike 2. Their 3rd swing should come sometime in the near future.

Where do I begin. I understand, well kind of, native Americans being upset about chief wahoo. Both the name (Indians or Tribe) was never meant to be derogatory or demeaning. The Dolans folded like a cheap lawn chair when confronted with the issue. Rumor has it they made a deal with MBL that they would change the name if Cleveland got the All Star game in 2019. If we stop recognizing or using the term Indians or Tribe than over time people forget native Americans and the travesty the US government did many years ago. Coming from Italian ancestors I guess we should stop people from depicting the mafia as Italian since the mafia existed in ever nationality (Irish, German, Russian, etc). They were all bad but that doesn’t mean we are all mafia. People are wayyyyyy too sensitive today. This sensitivity leads to anger and people living in the past instead of the future. So no, I do not agree with the name change. They will always be the Indians to me.
Soccer for you is like baseball for me. So I won’t watch them either way.
I know the name guardian comes from the guardian bridge. But that’s a dumb name for a baseball team. What are they guarding.
Interesting. Never heard of that bridge.
Agree Deb. The bridge is going from west 25th over to downtown. Been there for years.
