. . .here are my thoughts.

What would be totally inappropriate at a funeral?

The European Championships (soccer) recently concluded, so I got to hear quite a few pre-game national anthems. Prior to each England match, all the player’s belt out (quite poorly) their anthem. I’m struck with the same question each time I hear that tune: Will they have to change the lyrics so each “Queen” and “Her” becomes “King” and “His”? You know, if God ever finally decides to not “Save the Queen.” Queen Elizabeth has been seated on her throne for 69 years—longer than the vast majority of England’s population has been alive. But eventually she’ll die. I’m picturing a procession with hundreds of thousands of crying Brits—not a single full set of teeth among them—as her body is slowly driven to St. George’s Chapel. Once at the funeral proper, the imminent King Charles begins the eulogy.

“Probably a silly question chaps, but umm—and the timing, not so good I do admit—but do we, umm, do we change the lyrics to ‘God Save the King’?”

Stunned silence echos through the vast Chapel. Nervous laughter soon breaks the stillness, followed by Meghan Markle’s voice: “Hey Google . . .”

  1. I could see Charles doing that. A eulogist stating how happy they are that the deceased is gone.
