Q&complAints #007 : Always Takes Longer

What always takes longer than it should?

Post your answer in the LEAVE A COMMENT section below. Then scroll back up and see what I have to complain about. Or you can wait until afterward . . . I’m not the boss of you. You know what? Don’t write anything for all I care! But it shouldn’t take you long.

What always takes longer than it should?

Have you ever heard of Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon? How about The Streisand Effect? Certainly you know about Moore’s Law, right? Give it time; I’ll eventually complain about them all. I have a name for these laws, phenomenon, effects, or whatever else they’re labeled as. I call them “Fake Laws.” It’s not that the concepts they speak of are fake, per se, but they just aren’t laws by any stretch of the definition. They are generalities, quirks of environmental or human behavior that manifest more often than not—but not laws. Another such convention is Parkinson’s Law. It states:

“Work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion.”

For example, I could probably write this complaint in 10 minutes. But say someone were to offer to pay me an hourly rate up to a maximum of 5 hours. You can bet your ass it’d take me 30 times as long to finish. That being said, I’m not getting paid. And this still took longer than 10 minutes to write.

  1. Getting ready for bed. My husband knows that getting to bed at a reasonable time is difficult if not impossible for me. He doesn’t necessarily understand WHY, but he knows it’s a problem. A lot of psychological stuff goes on for me when it’s time to go to sleep (ending one day, facing the next)…anxiety mostly…so I try to put it off by doing a lot of stuff to “get ready” for bed instead of just doing it. Maybe someday I will figure out how to streamline the process, but that most likely won’t happen until I retire. I actually think I will be more efficient when I have more time on my hands. I will have less to worry about. Time has always been an issue for me.

    • Your husband sounds handsome, and he’s probably more understanding than you give him credit for.

  2. Just about everything I do now takes too long. More time on my hands and I am very easily sidetracked. (I sure a suffer from adult attention Deficit). I got everything done and worked over 40 hours a week and ran 3 elderly to be the doctor. Prepared 2 weddings and had 2 bridal and 2 baby showers. I had time to spare. Although sleeping was a luxury. More time on you hands the longer it takes to get tasks done.

  3. Since I ‘ve retired everything takes longer than I expected because it is to easy to put things off or get side tracked and end up doing something else first. When time is of an abundance it doesn’t seem that important to get things done fast.

    • Enjoy that retirement because you could be like me and still working. Not that I’m complaining. But I suppose I am.
