Commercial Failure #001 : Black Hole Garage

Commercial Failure

When was the last time you saw a commercial that made absolutely no sense?  Ohh … you don’t watch commercials.  I try not to, either.  But occasionally the bastards sneak up on you!  Join me as we explore a reasonable interpretation of a real gem.  Might as well help them punch up their slogan while we’re at it.

Today’s Commercial Failure:

GEICO: ‘Black Hole Garage’

Lots of issues with the physics in this commercial.  Far too many to list here.  The biggest faux pas—one that anyone familiar with the concept of black holes should know—is that anything entering a black hole is in there forever.  This isn’t completely true thanks to Hawking radiation.  So, if she does leave the black hole, it’d be one subatomic particle at a time, taking far longer than the current age of the Universe to do so.  Rest assured, though, she won’t be pulled out by grasping the end of a garden hose her husband tosses in.

Due to the immense gravity of the black hole—and especially because this is a small one—her body would’ve been torn into a thin line of particles even before entering the void.  This process is known as spaghettification.  “She’ll be back.”  No sir.  Your wife has been spaghettified!

If she somehow defied physics and was left fully intact, hubby may have been wrong when saying, “She can’t hear me.”  Sound waves will enter a black hole, but would probably be so stretched out and distorted as to be unrecognizable as a human voice.  Hear him?  Technically, yes.  Understand him?  Don’t count on it.  He sure wouldn’t be able to hear her ask for the hose.  Sound waves won’t be exiting the black hole.

Wifey’s a goner.  But on a positive note, she’ll never have to see him wear that hideous winter coat ever again.
