Whether you’ve read it or not, you’ve likely heard of Vladimir Nabokov’s novel, Lolita. It’s on all the “100 Greatest Novels of All Time” lists. Even those who haven’t read it probably know the plot centers around sexual exploits of a 37-year-old man, Humbert, with 12-year-old Lolita. Truth be told, that’s probably a major reason many people haven’t read Lolita. While many sexual acts are mentioned, they are done so in vague, artistic language. Nabokov’s beautiful wordsmithing makes the statutory rape, transportation with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity … and lewd or lascivious act with a child feel almost justifiable. I couldn’t believe the Russian-American author imagined so many ways of describing the devious acts, while completely avoiding any vulgarity or traditional sexual terminology. Throughout the novel, Humbert was in constant worry that Lolita would divulge their little secret. You can imagine if Lolita’s voice merely whispered, “Hello … officer?” Humbert would be awake quicker than if an air horn blew directly in his ear. I prefer using my phone’s Google Assistant as an alarm clock in lieu of any human child—no unwanted (or illegal) drama.
