Guess what?

Guess what?
Thirteen! Someday “13” will be the correct answer when this question is posed to me. Hasn’t been yet, though. Still, I continue to immediately respond “13” each time I’m asked this question. Honestly, there’s little chance it will ever manifest as the correct guess. I mean, why would someone ask, “Guess what?” only to follow with something silly:
- “My favorite prime number is 13.”
- “My wife and I just celebrated our 13th anniversary.”
- “Eight plus five is thirteen.”
The real question might just be why I chose such an abstract response as “13.” I would’ve been much better served to counter with one of these:
- “Someone you knew from high school recently died—and you’ll never admit it, but you secretly wish they would have kicked it when they were, like, 13.”
- “Your cousin—the one that asks you to join her for Mass every time she sees you—is pregnant for the 13th time.”
- “Trump signed 13 more executive orders that are definitely unconstitutional.”
Then again, a simple guess of “13” is more universal than any of the above. Not everyone has macabre thoughts or religious relatives. And I assume we’ll have a new POTUS in 2029.
