Emma Thompson won an award in 2023 that I had never heard of: Alliance of Women Film Journalists Most Daring Performance Award. I suppose a 63-year-old woman filming a full-frontal nude scene in Good Luck to You, Leo Grande deserves such an award. I’m sure that recognition was at the top of her bucket list. Undoubtedly ahead of the Grammy and the Tony she needs to hit for the EGOT cycle. Emma’s character in this film had her own bucket list—a sexual one. A rather mundane list that high school sophomores probably complete under the bleachers during their lunch period. The marching band’s entire flute section pooling their lunch money together for an entire month likely couldn’t afford a sex worker the caliber of Leo Grande. And that’s before considering the expense of a swanky hotel room. Well before “Good luck to you” was wished upon Leo Grande, the escort and his Jane discussed benefits of legalizing prostitution. Safety and tax revenue were mentioned. Not considered was the inevitable certainty of anonymous Yelp reviews. Imagine the reverberations of even a single inopportune flatus from a courtesan. The Yelp community would be aghast.
