What would a tough guy never do?
Devotion is a film based on the true story of a Black man in the mid 20th-century who proves himself worthy to serve as a U.S. Navy fighter pilot—a real tough guy. He ultimately did what no tough guy should: die an unheroic death. His plane is hit by a single rifle bullet after avoiding even a scratch from hundreds of anti-aircraft artillery. Oil leaks from the engine until finally going kaput while still over enemy territory. All things considered, his crash-landing appears successful. Except his leg gets pinned in the cockpit, preventing his escape from the plane. The exact cause of the pilot’s death hours later is uncertain—presumably blood loss from the injured extremity, and the resulting shock. His questionable, humdrum death is the perfect complement to this humdrum film that leaves viewers questioning why production wasn’t cut off at the legs before the film’s inevitable crash. The other lead actor, Glen Powell—portraying a character named Tom—looks remarkably like Top Gun era Tom Cruise. Cruise, of course, portrayed an elite Navy fighter pilot in the iconic film. Tenuous links and tomfoolery, though, failed to prevent Devotion from bombing.
