. . .here are my thoughts.
What is the most inspiring movie you’ve ever seen?
Living was the second consecutive movie I’ve watched about someone with a terminal illness. Fear not, though, it’s not some deep-seated depression that pulls me to choose these films. It’s RANDOM … and TOP. Allow me to explain. On my phone, I have an ever-expanding list of movies I plan to eventually watch—new additions constantly tacked onto the bottom. The next film I watch alternates using the following criteria: CHOICE, TOP, RANDOM.
- CHOICE—So I can watch Gladiator II as soon as it’s streaming.
- TOP—So I don’t leave Avatar: The Way of Water on my list indefinitely.
- RANDOM—I must be prepared for the random number generator to commit me to the 206-minute Killers of the Flower Moon.
Bill Nighy plays a by-the-book, stick to the tried-and-true, public works officer. He and I are much the same: me with my procedural system of choosing movies, he with his bureaucratic methods of stymieing progress. Nighy’s character makes the choice to get something meaningful accomplished in his final months. Living has inspired me to change my ways and watch 100% by CHOICE … as soon as I receive a terminal diagnosis.
